Maurice Ravel’s Alborada del Gracioso, performed by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Charles Dutoit conducting.
One of my favorite pieces of orchestral writing. Never a dull moment, full of shifting colors and intensities. For context, consider that this piece was written in 1918: It’s writer and audience were both steeped in the traditions of classical music of the 19th century, but this piece was written in the 20th, and as you’ll hear, it bends harmonically in ‘modern’ ways, which, I think, helps it resonate with, say, a tumblr audience who might be looking for an alternately-exciting, ravishing, and emotional piece of orchestral music that’s readily digestible…’cuz it’s relatively short, and just so fucking COOL.
