This might be old stuff for some of you. Whether or not, it’s something beautiful to hear: ”Kaval Sviri” an old Bulgarian folk song, as performed by the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir, widely known as “Le Mystére des Voix Bulgares”. They came to prominence in the US in the late 1980s along with, I suppose, the demise of the Soviets’ stronghold on eastern and central Europe.
What’s always struck me about this one is the major second intervals in the harmonies. That’s the sorta “clashy” or “extra-forward” quality you hear in some lines. You hardly ever hear such vocal harmonies, which is a shame…’cuz they’re SO FUCKING AWESOME! That’s not all it’s got going for it, either…It’s just beautiful all over the place harmonically. And when it’s over, you wanna bear hug each of those voluptuous Balkan ladies!
